Don’t fall for Southwest free airline promotion on Facebook

Just in time for the holidays, an offer that seems too good to pass up. What people don’t realize about the Facebook claim of free Southwest airline tickets is that it’s so good it’s too good to be true.

You don’t even need to click on the promotion to see the first red flag. It says the offer is from getupandsoar.net. That’s creative, but if Southwest was really giving away airline tickets the website would be Southwest.com.

If you click on the wall post, you’re told the offer will expire soon or when the 900+ remaining vouchers are given out. You’re told to share the post and add the comment, “Thanks Southwest.” There’s more than 1600 comments meaning 1600 people were taken.

It might seem benign, but it’s a great way to share your personal information with a scammer. They’ll have access to your wall and possibly your friend list depending on the privacy controls you have established. It will open you up to spam and possibly identity theft if you have personal information like your date of birth or location in your profile.

It may all sound a bit over the top, but letting your guard down just once is all you need. Scammers are sophisticated and there is a payoff in getting you to share their ripoff on Facebook. So, do yourself a favor and don’t fall for it.

  1. FYI: Southwest Airlines is NOT giving away tickets if you ‘like’ their Facebook page… been seeing that scam active again, so watch out!
