Free coffee including popular pumpkin spice latte

If you’re a coffee lover, you are in luck this week. There are two ways to get a free latte including the fall favorite – pumpkin spice.

Starbucks is offering free Caffe’ Latte drinks to promote its new do it yourself latte machine. It’s called the Verismo System. The in home brewing machine makes espresso, lattes and brewed coffee. You can taste these home brews at Starbucks Monday, October 15th, from 4 PM to 6 PM. Click here to find a participating store near you. Thanks to Women Get it Free for finding this deal.

The Verismo system retails for $199 and the pods are sold in boxes of 12 for $9.98 and up. The majority appear to retail for around $1 each. The milk pods are slightly cheaper at about 81-cents. To make a latte, you need a milk and espresso pod. So, you’ll still pay a high price for your latte. However, it will be half what you pay at your local Starbucks. The question is – does it taste the same? Go to Starbucks Monday and find out.

When Keurig first came out with its pods, they were pricey as well. Now, you can get them for fifty to sixty cents. You can save even more if brew coffee grounds in the Keurig filter. I expect the Starbucks Verismo pods will come down in price over time, but I don’t expect they’ll be as cheap as the Keurig anytime soon. After all, the Verismo drinks are higher end.

Mobile coupon for pumpkin spice latte
The second offers requires you to sign up for a mobile coupon from Target. If you buy one Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte or Frappuccino you get another one for free. The coupon expires October 26th. Thanks to Coupons-Saving for finding this deal.

Mobile coupons are becoming popular. I’ve signed up for them to save instantly at the cash register. I also like the ones from Bed Bath & Beyond because you can save money even if you forget your paper coupons at home. You’re more likely to have your phone so you can save without planning a trip to Bed Bath & Beyond.

As you know from my blog, I am a proponent of maintaining your privacy. With mobile coupons, you are giving away your cell phone number. However, I haven’t had any problems with spam or excessive text messages from retailers that offer mobile coupons. Plus, you can always unsubscribe if you want to stop receiving text messages.

I think mobile coupons are the future and you might as well start saving with them now.

Homemade pumpkin spice latte
If you want to maintain your privacy and still save money on coffee, how about making it yourself? For a NewsChannel 5 story, a student at Polaris Career Center showed me a recipe to make your own pumpkin spice latte at home with common household ingredients.

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon pumpkin spice (to make your own use equal parts cinnamon, allspice, ginger, and nutmeg)
  • 1.5 tablespoon pumpkin puree unsweetened
  • ¾ cup milk

Whisk all the ingredients together. Microwave until the milk is frothy. Then, add the coffee and stir everything together.

Starbucks offering Keurig K-Cups of select blends

Coffee lovers went crazy for Dunkin’ Donuts K Cups for the Keurig coffeemaker. Three months later, it’s still a popular story on my blog. Now, Starbucks is joining the K-Cup race.

Breakfast Blend, Pike Place Roast, Sumatra, Caffe Verona, French Roast and House Blend will be offered in K-Cups. Keurig says these K-Cup options are now available in Starbucks stores, although I haven’t seen them yet. The K-Cups will be available online via Keurig on December 27th.

Just remember to look past the hype. I found it’s cheaper to ignore the K-Cup phenomenon for Dunkin’ Donuts.  I simply bought a K-Cup filter and put ground Dunkin’ Donuts coffee in my filter every morning. I save even more by getting the ground coffee at the coffee shop and not the grocery store. I essentially make my own K-Cup every morning for a much cheaper price.

The pricing is unclear at this time for the Starbucks K-Cup, but K-Cup’s are generally more than ground coffee. You can get a great deal on Starbucks ground coffee at the grocery store. There are frequently sales and $1 off coupons. With the discounts, believe it or not, I pay less for Starbucks ground coffee for my fiance than I do my DD coffee.

So, it’s exciting for you Starbucks lovers. Just continue to be smart shoppers and do the price comparisons in your community. It might be cheaper to stick with the ground Starbucks coffee and make your own K-Cup every morning with a K-Cup filter.

I think most blends can be duplicated on your own with ground coffee, with one exception. If Starbucks expanded its blends and came out with a Pumpkin Spice K-Cup, I would buy those expensive K-Cups. It would save me $5 at Starbucks, but considering it’s so popular with so many people I don’t see that happening.

Now, if Starbucks expanded their K-Cup options and made a Pumpkin Spice Latte blend, I might buy the K-Cups. Pumpkin spice is a magical drink that I don’t think ground coffee could duplicate. However, I don’t see that happening considering so many people flock to Starbucks every fall for that spicy treat.

Dunkin’ Donuts K-Cups have arrived but there may be a cheaper option for perfect coffee

In February, I posted about Dunkin’ Donuts releasing K-Cups this summer. Well, they have arrived. I saw them at my Dunkin’ Donuts the other day, and Keurig announced their arrival in an email to customers today.

The K-Cups will be available in five flavors including Original Blend, Dunkin’ Decaf, French Vanilla, Hazelnut, and Dunkin’ Dark.  While Keurig announced the arrival of the K-Cups, they are only available in Dunkin’ Donuts stores and not online.

The K-Cups come in 14 count boxes. The price is not online, but I opted for an even cheaper option the other day. I bought ground coffee that I add to my Keurig with the filter K-Cup. It allows me to get a perfect brew every time while saving money. K-Cup’s are great, but they’re not cheap even if you buy them in bulk online.

While it’s great to have single cups of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee that you can brew at home, I’ll buy the DD K-Cups for coffee in a pinch. For everyday use, I’ll keep making my own Keuring cup by buying ground coffee in bulk.

Dunkin’ Donuts brewing single cups

For those of you who save money every morning by brewing your own cup of coffee, your selection is about to get wider. Dunkin’ Donuts is making single serving K-Cups for the Keuring brewer. If you’re like me and have one of these, right now you have to use the DD ground coffee in the filter to drink DD coffee. It works, but it’s messy and those single serving cups will come in handy when you’re in a hurry.

The Dunkin’ Donuts K-Cup will go on sale this summer in five flavors including Original Blend, Dunkin’ Decaf, French Vanilla, Hazelnut, and Dunkin’ Dark.

While the single serving cups will probably be expensive, DD typically has coupons. As a consumer reporter, I will let you know the coupons currently buy you a smaller ounce bag of ground coffee than the one DD sells. Every DD store doesn’t take the coupons, so sometimes you have to go with the smaller ounce bag and buy it at the grocery or big box discount store.

The good news — DD does have sales. They had a great offer – buy four bags of ground coffee for $19.99 around the holidays. The smaller ounce bags usually sell for more than $7 in the store, and as I mentioned they’re smaller than the four I bought for $19.99. It was a great deal.  I stocked up and will stock up on the K cups once they’re out.

You can also save on K-Cups by ordering them online rather than in the store, although it appears at the beginning DD K-cups will only be available at Dunkin’ Donuts.

While there is a price to pay for this convenience of single serving cups of coffee that brew perfectly every time, it’s much cheaper than buying my cup of Joe at the coffee shop. It’s better to pay a few cents than a few dollars.
